LSO/CABL/OABP Black History Month Event
Date: Tuesday, February 20, 2024
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST
Location: Online (Zoom)
The Canadian Association of Black Lawyers (CABL) and its partners, the Law Society of Ontario (LSO) and the Ontario Association of Black Paralegals (OABP), are delighted to present the Annual Black History Month Event on Tuesday, February 20, 2024, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. EST.
Our theme for this year is “Claiming Black Joy: Addressing Educational Inequities in Canadian Public Education Systems.” We recognize the pressing need to address disparities and challenges Black communities face concerning education. Addressing these disparities is essential because quality education is the most powerful tool in reducing poverty in children and adults, reducing social inequity, promoting self-actualization, and helps individuals reach their full potential. Quality education is key to achieving all other human rights and can be used to foster diversity, equity, and inclusion, and belonging.
Our erudite professional panellists serve in various areas of Canadian public education systems. Their goal is to provide insight into all levels of our education systems, including schooling – focusing on increased engagement with Black communities, Black parents and Black students, and supporting students’ achievements and Black Joy; proper data collection and its use to enhance accountability; creating solutions to help Black students and Black educators address anti-Black racism in the system; and discussing roles those in the systems can play to enable students to reach their full career potential, for example, becoming lawyers or paralegals.
