RECOGNIZING BLACK EXCELLENCE
Members of CABL are, and have always been, leaders in their profession. Our awards recognize the very best that the legal profession has to offer.
This year, we are calling for nominations for the awards listed below, to be presented at CABL’s 27th Annual Gala, A Moment in Time: The Evolution of the Legal Landscape, which will be held in Toronto, Ontario, on October 14, 2023.
NOMINATIONS
We are asking nominators to submit a summary of no more than 500 words, touching on the eligibility criteria and illustrating why you feel that the candidate should win the award. Please include the nominee’s resume and confirmation of consent for the nomination. Nominations will be reviewed by the Gala Committee, with recommendations of the intended recipient to be provided to the Board of Directors no later than October 1, 2023.
Nominations must be submitted to Antoine Collins at antoine.collins@irb-cisr.gc.ca by September 15, 2023.
With the exception of the Volunteerism award, the nominee need not be a member of CABL. However, they must be a current or retired member in good standing of a Canadian Law Society.
THE AWARDS
Mentorship Award
The CABL Mentorship Award will be presented to a leader in law who demonstrates exemplary, sustained commitment to mentoring, and inspiring legal leadership. The successful nominee will be a recognized leader who, through dedicated service, has made a substantial contribution to legal mentorship within their own organization and/or within the legal profession. To be considered for this award, the nominee will have demonstrated mentorship skills in the following areas:
- providing constructive feedback in a professional manner;
- assisting in building social networking connections within their own organization and/or within the legal system;
- serving as a role model and leader;
- providing advice with respect to professional development; and
- creating a positive, trusting relationship amongst professionals to foster personal and professional growth.
Examples provided should reflect ‘mentorship’, not simply ‘leadership’. As a testament to their commitment to mentorship, the nominee will have directly or indirectly mentored numerous legal leaders, leaving a recognized legacy of inspired leadership. The mentor must also demonstrate an on-going commitment to fostering their own professional development.
Early Career Lawyers Award
The CABL Early Career Lawyers Award will be presented to a Canadian lawyer who has demonstrated leadership and excellence in the Canadian legal profession.
The recipient of this award must demonstrate the following qualifications and characteristics:
- A record of innovative and passionate leadership;
- A demonstrated concern for and contribution to the advancement of social justice;
- A well-rounded person actively involved in and committed to their community; and
- Engagement in the practice of law for 10 years or less.
Advocacy Award
This CABL Advocacy Award is intended to honour advocates who exemplify the finest traditions of advocacy in representing members of our society whose cause may be politically or socially unpopular or against the mainstream, and who make a substantial contribution to achieving the goal of social justice by championing the rights and liberties that are the foundation of democracy.
Volunteerism Award
Passion, dedication and a commitment to community are the driving forces behind the volunteers who receive the CABL Volunteerism Award.
This award recognizes the exceptional volunteer achievements of the recipient, who embodies the caring community we aspire to build. With this award, we seek to recognize a CABL member who has made significant, sustained, and unpaid contributions to their community in Canada or abroad.
