Dear Members,
As we commemorate the beginning of Pride season, we take this moment to celebrate the diversity and resilience of the LGBTQ2S+ community in Canada and around the world. For over 50 years, Pride has driven progress in eliminating discrimination based on who we love or how we identify and Black LGBTQ2S+ folks have played pivotal roles in Pride from the very beginning. As we honour the strides made towards equality, we must also recognize the ongoing challenges faced by many in our community and the need for us all to build a better future for LGBTQ2S+ communities.
LGBTQ2S+ individuals often encounter unique challenges related to their sexual orientation, gender identity, or both. Black queer folks are also disproportionately affected by violence. Discrimination, bias, and a lack of understanding can impede their personal and professional development. As an organization committed to fostering inclusivity, we understand the importance of visibility, representation and programming that is responsive to the unique needs of our diverse membership. That is why we are thrilled to announce the launch of CABL’s LGBTQ2S+ Mentoring Program.
According to Mark B. Baer, a Mediator, Conflict Resolution Consultant, and Educator on Implicit Bias, one of the primary benefits of LGBTQ2S+ specific mentoring programs lies in the representation and visibility they offer to the community. Witnessing successful LGBTQ2S+ individuals in leadership roles or excelling in their careers serves as inspiration and motivation for those embarking on similar paths. It also challenges stereotypes and misconceptions, illustrating that talent, dedication, and skill transcend gender identity or sexual orientation. By enhancing representation, these programs play a role in dismantling biases and promoting a more inclusive society.
CABL’s LGBTQ2S+ Mentoring Program aims to provide a safe and supportive platform for participants to openly discuss the challenges they are faced with and thrive. We hope that this initiative will not only guide them through their personal and professional journeys but also contribute to breaking down barriers and fostering understanding. Mentors within this program will be able to offer guidance on navigating workplace dynamics, addressing discrimination, and building resilience in the face of adversity.
The program will officially launch in January 2025, but we will begin recruiting mentors and mentees during Pride Month and beyond. We invite all members of CABL to participate as mentors or mentees.
Together, let us work towards a future where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can achieve their fullest potential. Thank you for your continued support and commitment to fostering a more inclusive, diverse and equitable community.
With pride and solidarity,
Kyle Elliot
