Congratulations to the Honourable Aston J. Hall!
Effective June 3, 2021, the Honourable Aston J. Hall becomes the new Associate Chief Justice of the Ontario Court of Justice. Associate Chief Justice Hall will replace the Honourable Peter J. DeFreitas and will be the first Black judge to fill this role.
Hall was called to the bar in 1995 and appointed as a judge of the Ontario Court of Justice in 2011. From 2015 to 2017, he was the local administrative judge for the Scarborough courthouse. In 2017, Associate Chief Justice Hall was appointed regional senior judge for the Toronto Region. He supervised sitting judges and justices of the peace and provided judicial oversight to the amalgamation of the new Toronto courthouse and Toronto Region Bail Centre.
Throughout his career, Associate Chief Justice Hall has been a champion for diversity as a member of numerous judicial committees that have played roles in the creation of a specialized court for Indigenous people and the development of programs for Black History Month to celebrate diversity and the contributions of African Canadians in the development of Canada. CABL very much looks forward to the important work Associate Chief Justice Hall will take on in his latest role!
