Janet ‘Jay Jay’ Johnson

Background

Jay Jay holds a Bachelor of Human Justice from the University of Regina in Saskatchewan. Jay Jay is passionate about community building, empowering others, and promoting inclusion. During her undergraduate years, she held several leadership roles, including student ambassador, teaching assistant, and residence assistant. In these positions, Jay Jay demonstrated her exceptional organizational skills by curating culturally relevant events to empower her fellow students. As a first-generation immigrant from Nigeria, Jay Jay’s experiences have shaped her understanding of the importance of creating inclusive spaces.

Post-graduation, Jay Jay started a meaningful career with the Government of Saskatchewan, coordinating income assistance and case planning for clients from underserved communities. Subsequently, she transitioned to a managerial position at a family services non-profit organization, she led her team in delivering settlement and crisis management to newcomers and refugees. Her pivotal role in securing additional funding expanded the organization’s reach and impact.

Jay Jay is a second-year law student at Osgoode Hall Law School. She continues championing community-building as the Mentorship Coordinator for BLSA Osgoode and the Residence Fellow. Serving as a Deans Fellow, she fostered the academic integration of 1Ls. Before she was elected as the 2024-2025 BLSA Canada president, Jay Jay served as the National Director of Professional Development. Her impactful programming, from the national firm hop to the bilingual clerkship open house, invigorated Black law students nationwide.

Having completed an internship at Blakes LLP, Jay Jay is excited to embark on her legal career as a summer student at Torys LLP. In her spare time, Jay Jay enjoys rewatching ATLA, listening to podcasts, and hosting friends.
