Lanise Hayes

Background

Lanise Hayes is a partner with Nelligan O’Brien Payne LLP, and head of its Indigenous Law practice group, a member of the Partner Advisory Committee and Chair of the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Committee. Lanise graduated from Université Laval in 1994 and was called to the Barreau du Québec in 1996 and the Law Society of Nunavut in 2022. She advises Indigenous governments, organizations and individuals on a broad range of issues, including land management, local governance, leasing, Indigenous rights, Charter and constitutional issues and corporate and commercial matters. Lanise also does litigation and employment law in Quebec and Nunavut. She worked with Justice Canada in its Aboriginal Law Centre advising on litigation involving Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada in land management and land use, human rights, third party management and tort as well as complex litigation, and in its Shared Services Canada legal service unit advising on procurement and machinery of government.

In her free time, Lanise enjoys reading, volunteering at World Cup and NORAM ski cross events. She sits on the Board of Volunteer Ottawa and supports other local organizations. Lanise is fluent in English, French and Italian and loves to travel.
